Development and operation
This PSI Porsche 996 GT2-R was built as a development platform in the winter of 2002/2003 and was entered sporadically in various FIA GT races in the following years, as well as in national GT championships such as the BELCAR and the French GT/FFSA.
The main focus was on the further development of the engine and transmission, as well as engine management. In collaboration with renowned parts suppliers such as PANKL, MAHLE and KKK, the insights gained from the FIA/GT Championships were used to optimise the entire vehicle architecture.
Engineering partnership with BOSCH Motorsport
The close connection with BOSCH Motorsport led to the last generation of BOSCH MS engine control units being used in the cars from the 2004 season onwards. This technological partnership allowed the PSI 996 GT2-R to attain a new level of performance.
Collaboration with Porsche Motorsport
Thanks to our good contacts with PORSCHE Motorsport in Weissach, PSI Motorsport was informed early on about new developments in axle beam parts for the front and rear axles of the Porsche GT3-RS.
A package was put together for the 2004 season that enabled the team to compete for podium places on an equal footing with all the other GT cars from rival manufacturers in international GT racing.
Record-breaking lap times
By the end of the 2004 season, the 996 GT2-R from PSI Motorsport was posting impressive lap times that set new standards. The car was able to hold its own against strong competition such as the Corvette C-5R and Chrysler Viper GTS, recording times below the 2:16 minute mark at Spa-Francorchamps (including the old bus stop chicane) and a 1:29 lap time at Zolder.
Tyre partnerships
Another key factor in the team's success was the works contract with Dunlop, and later Pirelli, which gave them factory support for national and international races.
Races and successes
The car was successfully entered in the French GT/FFSA series in 2004, and in 2005 PSI Motorsport rented the car to two Belgian brothers for the BELCAR Championship.
Influence and demand
The PSI 996 GT2-R made a name for itself in America, Eastern Europe and Asia thanks to the results it posted combined with its reliability. This led to a steady expansion of the company's customer base. Many teams from the French GT/FFSA approached PSI Motorsport about purchasing and racing a PSI 996 GT2-R like this.
Recent rebuild contract
Of the 10 PSI 996 GT2-R models built, VIN #WPOZZZ99Z3SPSI004# was recently acquired by the Busch family (www.twinbusch.de) and is to be fully restored by PSI Motorsport Classics over the coming months.
This car will be on show primarily in the Peter Auto racing series from 2025 onwards, with the familiar ambition and driving talent of the Busch family members clearly aiming for a place on the winners' podium.
