A race car with pedigree and character

Born in the winter of 2002: the start of a new racing legend

The PSI Porsche 996 GT2-R with VIN #WPOZZZ99Z2SPSI002# was also produced on the basis of another 996 Turbo bodyshell during the winter months of 2002. This was the first optimised race car fielded by the PSI Motorsport Team in the FIA/GT Championship, and was developed on the basis of the team's extensive experience in the first two FIA/GT Championships.

The car had gained basic maturity to compete in a league of tough competitors such as the Chrysler Viper GTS, Maserati MC12, Lister Storm, Saleen SR7 and Ferrari F550 Maranello. The Aston Martin DB9-R would later join the lineup.

The driver pairing of Markus Palttala and Kurt Mollekens formed a homogeneous team that was able to hold its own against the entire FIA/GT field. That same year, Kurt Mollekens and Eric Geboers drove this car in the Belgian BELCAR Championship, where they consistently achieved podium finishes.

Further development and challenges: the 996 GT2-R in Spain

The car was later sold to José Abia in Spain, where it competed successfully in the Spanish GT Championship. It still managed to finish in the top ten despite a reduction in the air restrictor imposed by national regulations.

In 2004, the national sporting authorities decided to reduce the tyre width to 12 inches on the rear axle and 9 inches on the front axle, which would reduce lap times by a further 1.5 seconds – a decision that slowed further sales of these vehicles in the Spanish market.

The PSI 996 GT2-R today: a club racing classic

The car can be admired at Spanish club sport events today. The rare PSI 996 GT2-R Twin-Turbo is still an impressive showpiece and GT powerhouse that can compete in the Endurance Racing Legends Championship run by Peter Auto.
